The earliest civilizations emerged when people discovered first that they could domesticate animals such as sheep and pigs and then that it was possible to control what was growing around them by planting seeds of barley, wheat, flax and lentils. Although the discovery of arable agriculture took place in Mesopotamia around 11,500 years ago, it was probably farmers like the one depicted in this Calendar from central Anatolia (part of modern Türkiye) who carried that knowledge to Europe as they migrated all over the continent.
